Exhaust pipe clamps

Exhaust clamps and clamps

An example: You wouldn't believe how many clamps were used to attach a flathead or knucklehead exhaust system to a Harley - until you counted them on an original motorcycle. And that made perfect sense: the manifolds are only inserted into the cylinder heads, the transition must be tight at this point and the pipe must fit exactly into the cast socket. To keep it that way, the pipe must not shake or vibrate very much. This is why the front manifold is fixed to the frame with a clamp. The pipe under the gear case, the S-pipe, is attached to the frame with a clamp fixed permanently to the pipe. The connecting point of the muffler is also fixed to the frame with clamps. The factory knew exactly where the critical points were, and the clamps and clamping points were chosen with care.

On the Panhead, K-model and Sportster, the manifolds were also attached to the cylinder head with a clamp.

The W&W range of exhaust clamps

There are exactly matching and faithful reproductions for all original clamps and clips: for J and JD models, for the Flatheads of the R, W, V and U series, for Big Twins with Knucklehead, Panhead and Shovelhead engines and for the K and XL models. The manufacturer The GasBox provides a large selection. Exhaust clamps like these will also pass the AMCA's critical inspectors.

For the not-so-original applications, there are clamps in Q- and P-shape and various diameters, which are common on Harleys. (The difference lies in the position of the two clamping tabs.) The Dragpipe clamps are actually P-clamps, but have a much longer tab for mounting. Universal clamps from Berning and Supertrapp complete the range.
