Hydraulic Rear Drum Brakes

Hydraulic Rear Drum Brakes

Rear drum brakes with hydraulic actuation.

In 1958 Harley-Davidson’s FL(H) Duo-Glide not only brought the first rear suspension, but also a new, hydraulically actuated drum brake for the rear wheel. One advantage of this arrangement over its rod-actuated predecessor was significantly higher deceleration values with improved control. The second, often overlooked advantage was, that the rear brake was decoupled from influences caused by the movement of the swing arm. With a rigid mechanical connection via a linkage, there is always the risk that the brake will be applied unintentionally in the event of extreme compression. With the flexible transmission of the braking force through a hydraulic hose, this danger does not exist. Well done, Harley-Davidson!

Selection of parts for hydraulic rear drum brake at W&W

All components are available as reproductions, as kits and as individual parts: Drums, shoes, pads, springs, axle bushings, wheel brake cylinders, lines. In addition, screws, washers, plates, in short, all the necessary assembly parts. As always, you can select the parts according to the original spare part number from the parts manual, but because you don't always have that to hand, there is also an exploded view in the store for orientation.
